The Ethanol Disaster While the hysteria continues to mount about global warming all sorts of “solutions” are being advanced and some are more harmful than others and some are even more harmful than fossil fuels!. Biofuels have achieved a great deal of popularity but that is mainly because the politicians have been pushing it hard along with the media. . The most common biofuel is a blend of gasoline called E85, and this is a mixture in a ratio of 15:85 gasoline:ethanol. But the actual ratio is subject to change due to the outside temperatrue and it might be better named E70-85. During the Winter months you need more gasoline in the mixture to ensure the fuel works properly, so E85 is at least 70% ethanol. Coskata is a startup biofuel company that is in the process of opening its first energy production plant in Illinois that claims it can generate ethanol from just about any carbon-rich source, for --get this-- less than $1 per gallon. It's Because of to their use of microorganisms which secrete ethanol and digest carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Those gasses are the emissions after the feedstock is heated to a steamy 1900F. The forecast from the company is to generate over one hundred million gallons per year by 2011.
