San Juan is the capital and largest city of Puerto Rico. The island of Puerto Rico is almost rectangular in shape, and is the smallest and the most eastern island of the Greater Antilles. The latest census estimates place the cities population at 433,733, making it the 42nd largest city under the jurisdiction of the United States.

The territory is very mountainous except in the regional coasts, but Puerto Rico offers astonishing variety rain forest, deserts, beaches, caves, oceans and rivers. Puerto Rico has three main regions the mountainous interior, the coastal lowlands, and the karst area.

Today, San Juan serves as one of Puerto Rico's most important seaportand is the islands manufacturing, financial, cultural and tourist centre.

The beautiful city of San Juan was founded in 1521. A massive wall and forts were built around the city to protect it from the enemy. The city was used as a stopover for ships that came from Spain and a stronghold to prevent the enemy from taking control of the island and making Puerto Rico an enemy base. These walls and fortifications are part of the heritage left by Spain to Puerto Rico.

La Muralla the city wall built between 1539 and 1641 using sandstone blocks up to 20 feet thick the wall was completed in 1782. It protected the city against enemy attacks. At the western mouth of the bay you will see Goat Island and a small Spanish fort built in 1610.

The capital boasts numerous deluxe hotels, fine restaurants, museums, historical buildings, beaches and shopping centres. Today the cobblestone streets, interior patios, hanging balconies, plazas, and chapels make of this historic city a charming and picturesque place to visit.

The Greater San Juan Metropolitan Area features many interesting activities for the night crowd. Night life includes restaurants, pubs, theatres, dance halls. Popular local hotspots include Coaches, Hooligans, 80s Cafe, Shannons Pub. Most of the larger hotels and resorts feature pubs, artistic shows and other night entertainment.

In the surroundings of San Juan, there is a favourable setting to practise mountain sports, hand gliding, fishing in rivers and streams, horse riding and four track excursions in the hills with whatever is needed to enjoy adventure and nature.

The city has a privileged climate with maximum temperatures of 35 C and minimum temperatures of 19C in summer while, in winter, they range from 13 C to 0C.
