Anxiety and Phobia Cure - By: Alan B. Densky, CH, Posted on: 2007-10-25

Imagine a life controlled by anxiety and fear, where each feat is dissected and even the least decision is agonized over. Hours are spent examining daily obligations or situations that many people deal with easily. According to the National Institute of Health, better than 40 million adults in the United States who suffer from anxiety disorders have this manner of life.

In that vein, more than 18 percent of those living in the United States have some kind of a panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, broad anxiety disorder or phobias, such as a social phobia, agoraphobia, or a specific phobia, which embody common fears of articles like germs, heights or elevators.

Are you among those people? Many people aren't aware how to recognize if their natural fears have developed into a phobia. A phobia is classified as an unfounded fear or dread. When a person encounters a phobia trigger, they might grow panicked with faster heart palpitation and respiration. Frequently, that person might begin feeling a choking sensation or their hands turn sweaty. The person may additionally have ringing in their ears and realize they are not able to focus on the surroundings.

As with any unpleasant feeling, people may try great lengths to elude the incident, settings or things that initiate them. If a person has a social phobia, they may steer clear of people, or if it is a common phobia, like spiders or coffins, those who suffer a phobia may aim to avoid those triggers.

The anxiety disorder phobia can be one of the most convoluted to solve because related coping issues frequently result from the anxiety phobia relationship, such as despair or drug addiction. In fact, many people who suffer from one anxiety disorder frequently develop additional anxiety disorders.

Though it may be useful to make an appointment with a mental health professional to identify your phobia and examine the cause of it, the most important step is entering into treatment for the anxiety and phobia. Several therapies exist for effectively eliminating a phobia, including drugs, talk therapy, systematic desensitization, hypnotherapy, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Typically, drugs for anxiety and phobia treatment can include sedatives, which actually exacerbate the trouble because they do not deal with the deep reason for the phobia. Other mental health professionals choose talk therapy; however, conversing about or even thinking about the condition or environment of the principal anxiety phobia can produce a panic attack.

Traditional hypnosis—which merely helps the client accomplish a relaxed state of hypnosis and then giving post-hypnotic suggestions or commands—can be very successful if the client is amenable to it. However, many people with phobias snub the notion that they will be more comfortable and at ease when they are challenged with the situation or environment that produces anxiety from the related phobia.

Given the challenges and even setbacks of other types of treatment for phobias, systematic desensitization can be an effectual treatment. It is the practice of gradually desensitizing a client to the trigger that sets off the anxiety disorder phobia and resulting panic attacks.

For instance, if a client wants to overcome a phobia of dogs, she is asked to first sit and imagine a dog until she is secure with the image. Then, she is given a photograph of a dog to look at. Perhaps she advances to holding a toy dog and so on until she is able to remain in the presence of a dog without the panic symptoms—possibly even stroke the dog.

The key point is that, following each step, the client admits that nothing harmful transpired and that she is safe. If at any time she undergoes panic or fear, the therapist asks the client to go back to the preceding step until she has recovered a sense of ease.

Fortunately, there is a way to make this process less painful and frightening: Systematic desensitization can be carried out as the subject is in a relaxed state of hypnosis. While in a relaxed hypnotic trance, the client would be asked to perform the same actions, however she would actually remain very peaceful as she imagined herself feeling comfortable and relaxed in the situation that provokes anxiety.

Just as in the live systematic desensitization that transpires without the advantage of hypnosis, if she suffers any anxiety concerning her phobia, she is directed to go back to the previous step. The only downside is that this technique can necessitate a fair amount of time to create reprieve from a phobia.

The quickest and most effective way to get rid of a phobia is a Neuro-Linguistic Programming technique called a Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation. It frequently cures the subject of a chronic phobia in just one session. The practice actually programs the subject to disassociate, or mentally step outside of themselves at the point that they would normally experience their anxiety attack. The process literally separates the subjective emotions from the mental images that cause the panic attack in the first place.

CONCLUSION: While any phobia treatment that someone assumes will involve work and commitment, systematic desensitization coupled with hypnosis can offer an effective cure. But the NLP Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation can offer a solution that almost seems magical by allowing the subject to triumph over the phobia quickly with significantly less—perhaps even no—discomfort or panic.
