Many people feel some discomfort or experience some degree of anxiousness when thrust into a new situation or a crowd of people they don't know. However, for roughly ten percent of the population, anxiety about social situations is so severe as to be disabling. Researchers now estimate that an even larger group of people may have to deal with more mild types of anxiety in social situations that can cause significant problems in everyday social interactions.

The term for this kind of anxiety is social phobia. Social Phobia usually takes place when a person has fears and worries that usually are caused by being in a social event. A person with a social phobia may also struggle to deal with forcing themselves to stop thinking excessively about how others are passing judgment on or evaluating them.

For those who have social phobia, anxiety can take place in many kinds of situations, including going shopping, attending a party, speaking in public, being in front of a group of people, or being given an interviewed.
